University Web & Design collaborates with campus communication professionals to establish creative vision for university communications. The office provides a suite of services to support implementation of that vision including collaborative planning and management, concepts, design and web communications strategy. Position Summary:

The Senior Web Designer is a key member of the of the University Communications team in the Office of University Advancement at William & Mary.

The Senior Web Designer is responsible for website design, digital asset design and consultation and collaboration. Their work will shape the digital face of William & Mary, crafting experiences that reflect our universitys excellence and innovation. This role involves executing high-quality, user-centric web designs, ensuring they are visually appealing, functional and intuitive. The designer will create concepts, wireframes and hi-fi mockups for web and digital communications projects and systems (e.g., proprietary university templates, digital graphics, microsites, etc.).

As a senior member of the design team, the Senior Web Designer will work closely with developers, project managers, and other cross-functional teams to create seamless, responsive and innovative web designs. The ideal candidate will bring a strong mix of creativity, technical and design thinking skills to the table. The Senior Web Designer will have a significant impact on the digital direction of the university, ensuring all web designs not only meet the highest standards of quality but also deliver exceptional user experiences.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the design of engaging, user-friendly web experiences.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to define design requirements and project goals.
• Create wireframes, mockups and prototypes that effectively communicate design concepts and functionality.
• Ensure that designs are responsive and optimized for various devices and browsers.
• Maintain consistency in visual design and user experience across different platforms.
• Work closely with the web development team providing detailed implementation specifications.
• Successfully manage multiple web design projects simultaneously.
• Stay updated on the latest web design trends, tools and technologies.

Conditions of Employment:

• There is an occasional need for work outside of typical business hours. Some projects and publications are tied to the academic calendar and university events and require work on evenings and weekends.
• This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act. This position may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc. as directed and approved by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelors degree in web design or graphic design (or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience).
• Significant work experience and success in producing thoughtful and compelling design concepts for web and other digital applications (typically 5+ years).
• Expert knowledge and ability to consult on responsive web design, including intuitive breakpoint identification and convey content approach across various devices (e.g. mobile, tablet and desktop).
• Ability to learn and adapt to the constraints of custom web content management systems.
• Proficiency with web design software (Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD), with an understanding of component creation and advanced prototyping.
• Strong understanding of HTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP, with the ability to collaborate effectively with front-end developers.
• Knowledge of WCAG 2.1 AA web accessibility guidelines.
• Excellent organizational, problem-solving and communication skills with a commitment to excellence and an eye for detail.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience working in higher education.
• Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite products and office productivity tools.
• Graphic design expertise for other mediums, including print.

Advertised Pay Range:

Up to $63,000, commensurate with experience
