Job Description

The County of Volusia is seeking a Fire Division Chief who is performance-driven, demonstrates high integrity, and is team and customer service focused. Located in Volusia County, FL, this role oversees day-to-day administrative and technical operations within the Fire Rescue Division, ensuring standards align with division goals. The incumbent ensures operational efficiency, fosters communication with other agencies, and makes critical decisions independently.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Supervise Special Risk personnel involved in fire fighting, prevention, and training.
  2. Act in the absence of the Deputy Fire Chief.
  3. Plan and direct fire and rescue operations, manage resources, and coordinate with team leaders.
  4. Contribute to long-term fire protection programs and accreditation processes.
  5. Assist with station planning, budgeting, and resource management.
  6. Lead emergency command operations and develop policies, procedures, and directives.
  7. Ensure compliance with regulations, collective bargaining agreements, and division standards.
  8. Participate in personnel management, including recruitment, promotions, evaluations, and discipline.
  9. Maintain records, oversee medical and training programs, and coordinate facility maintenance.
  10. Respond to emergencies and perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. At least 14 years of Fire Rescue experience, with 4 years at Battalion Chief or higher, OR
  2. Bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Business, or Public Administration with 10 years of experience, including 4 at Battalion Chief level, OR
  3. Associate’s degree with 12 years of experience, including 4 at Battalion Chief level.

Additional requirements include a valid Florida driver’s license, successful medical and physical exams, and specific certifications such as State of Florida Fire Officer II and III, EMT or Paramedic license, among others.

Knowledge of firefighting principles, fire prevention codes, emergency medical services, and effective leadership skills are essential. The candidate must be adaptable to stressful situations, able to work in diverse environments, and willing to relocate if necessary.
