The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is recruiting an Environmental Scientist (ES) in the Watershed Restoration Grants Branch (WRGB) to join a dynamic team in the implementation and administration of grant programs. The successful candidate will participate in the planning and implementation of the Fisheries Restoration Grant Program (FRGP) to restore, enhance, or protect anadromous salmonid habitat in California as well as contribute to the objectives of the California Water Action Plan, State Wildlife Action Plan, and the fulfillment of CDFW’s Mission.
This job offers an excellent opportunity for entry-level scientist who are passionate to learn the state and federal permitting landscape and build statewide relationships. The incumbent will work closely with CDFW Regions, Army Corps of Engineers, State Water Resources Control Board, California Coastal Commission and other permitting agencies. As well, they will become knowledgeable about the California Environmental Quality Act. This position has the opportunity to assist in improving the equity of FRGP and our permitting.
Duties will include, but not limited to working with engineering, science, and other colleagues to maintain and manage the FRGP's permit coverage for grant projects. The incumbent works collaboratively with other staff and stakeholders to prepare?regulatory and compliance documents, tracks?projects for regulatory compliance, as well as manage contracts and grants. Assists with review of?grant?proposals and coordinate with FRGP?and WRGB?staff in accomplishing specific tasks?including records management and permit compliance. Incumbent is part of a team that administers the FRGP Proposal Solicitation Notice, reviews grant proposals, and participates in Technical Review Teams for proposals. The incumbent will help in training grantees and grant managers on permit conditions.
Ideal candidates for this position will be a detail-oriented, self-starter with a passion to learn new skills. They shall also be compassionate, honest, and open-minded. The incumbent should have exemplary interpersonal skills and be able to work independently. The candidate should have sound understanding of ecological processes with the ability to quickly interpret applicable regulations. Candidates must be organized and able to collaborate with a broad range of partners to deliver on a tight timeline. Candidates should possess very strong analytical, verbal, and written communication skills, and be able to make sound decisions based upon data, policies, and regulations.
